[edit] Board of EducationIn March of 2009 Torres announced his candidacy in a letter to the New Paltz Times.[1] He claimed that his main reason for running was his unique insight into how the district worked. He also stated on many occasions his goal of making the District green.[2] On May 19, 2009 Torres was one of three candidates vying for three open seats,[3] and was elected with 820 votes.[4] He became the youngest elected official in the history of New Paltz, New York, and the youngest elected Latino in the history of New York State. He was nineteen years and eight days old.[5] [edit] 10 Under 20Torres was selected as one of the “10 under 20” by the Times Herald-Record. This was largely due to his “retrieval of funds” from the sporting apparel featuring New Paltz High School's name and colors sold at Olympia Sports.[6] Since then over $200,000 has been donated to some two hundred school districts in the North East.[7] [edit] Student activitiesTorres is a freshman attending Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He is double majoring in Communication and Political Science. Torres was voted by his senior class "Most Likely To Win A Grammy" and is a former student writer for the New Paltz Times.
