D'Angelo Sandwich Shops is a chain of sandwich shops located throughout New England. It serves various kinds of hot and cold subs, wraps, and salads.
[edit] HistoryOn March 1, 1967, Brian J. McLaughlin who was then 21 years old opened "Ma Riva's Sub Shop" in Dedham, Massachusetts. Later the name was changed to Angelo Sub Shop and then the letter D was added, supposedly standing for "delicious." D'Angelo would serve as a pioneer in lunch offerings, making it possible for guests on the go to enjoy fresh salads, Syrian pokket bread and sub sandwiches, made to order. They were famous for their fresh Steak and Cheese sandwich. D'Angelo owned Liberty Bakery which baked and delivery all the bread to each store. They owned Progressive Foods distrubution center which delivered all the food to each store every week and they owned a USDA meat processing plant to shave the 50,000 LBS. of steak consumed each week. D'Angelo had the highest weekly volume of any Sub chain store in 1993. PepsiCo bought up D'Angelo in 1993 with the intent to grow the chain into a national brand alongside sister chain's Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken. They eliminated D'Angelo's ice cream brand, "Chips" after purchasing the chain.[1] In August of 1997, Papa Gino's Holdings Corporation, the parent company of Papa Gino's, acquired D'Angelo, from prior owner Yum! Brands (then known as Pepsico Inc.'s Pizza Hut unit).[2]. D'Angelo's menu currently features more than 44 sandwiches, a variety of soups and fresh-made salads. [edit] MiscellaneousThe chain originally produced its menu as a list of numbered sandwiches; over time the numbers were discarded except for the "Number 9," a steak sandwich better known by its number, which has become a registered trademark of D'Angelo Sandwich Shops. The first D'Angelo outside New England opened in Orlando, Florida in December 2006.[3] It was closed in mid 2008. [edit] References
