Curie Metropolitan High School is a secondary school located at 4959 S. Archer in the Archer Heights community of Chicago's southwest side. The school has a Technical, Performing Arts, & IB Programme. Curie Metropolitan High School was named after Nobel Prize laureate Maria Sklodowska–Curie in recognition of the area's historically heavy Polish-American populace. Curie Metro High School is accessible via the Chicago L's nearby Pulaski Orange Line station. Curie Students are recognized by the color of the top of their School I.D. Yellow = Freshmen Red = Sophomores Blue = Juniors White = Seniors
[edit] CurriculumCurie Metropolitan High School has been an International Baccalaureate Organization World School since January 1999, and offers both the IB Middle Years Programme and the IB Diploma Programme.[1] [edit] ImprovementCurie Metro was one of 16 schools nation-wide selected by the College Board for inclusion in the EXCELerator School Improvement Model program beginning the 2007-2008 school year. The project was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. [edit] DemographicsAs of 2009, Curie has a total enrollment of 3,260 students and is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic high school.[2] [edit] AthleticsCurie High School is a school with a wide variety of sports. With 12 varsity sports, Curie students have a wide selection to choose from. Most notable sport recently is the varsity water polo team, which has won two consecutive Chicago Public League titles in the past two years. As of May 3, 2009, Curie became ranked #14 out of 60+ schools that offer a water polo program (as stated on www.illpolo.com). At this years city championship, Curie managed to defeat rival Whitney Young 11 to 9.
