Like most social movements, the clothes free movement which promotes the acceptance of social nudity has garnered a fair amount of criticism.

[edit] Discrimination

Some national organizations affiliate with clubs that choose to discriminate based on inclusion of gays, singles, same-sex couples, and those with tattoos, piercings, body jewelry. From AANR-SW FAQ: "Some clubs have rules addressing such body decorations. The best idea is to call ahead and ask." Kathy Keen has reported that Ellen Woodall, writer and nudist researcher, wrote in her MA dissertation, "The naked truth about the American nudist movement is its failure to live up to the ideal that everyone is treated the same, despite social standing or the shape of their bodies". [1]

The Naturist Society, in its participating agreement for its Naturist Network, which includes nudist resorts, notes that its members must not "discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual orientation." However, it goes on to note that "TNS acknowledges that single male visitors may be subject to a quota if a club or resort deems this unavoidable." The Naturist Society will issue joint membership cards to same-sex couples, however.

There is a trend toward acceptance of single males and same-gender couples; as of July 2008, the following Florida nudist resorts post statements of non-discrimination on their websites: Lake Como Family Nudist Resort, Sunsport Gardens Family Naturist Resort, and Sunnier Palms, and a number of other resorts that have no official statements practice non-discrimination policies with regard to single males and same-gender couples. However, three of the largest Florida resorts in membership have statements indicating restrictions on single males: Cypress Cove, Paradise Lakes, and Caliente.
