Crain Communications Inc is a major publishing conglomerate based in Detroit, Michigan. The company publishes a variety of trade newspapers, including some city-based business newspapers, such as Crain's Cleveland Business, Crain's Chicago Business, Crain's Detroit Business, and Crain's New York Business, and Crain's Manchester Business. These weeklies follow the same formula, including finance, manufacturing, health care, real estate, technology, and government sections, as well as an "in-depth" section. In addition to newspaper production, the editors maintain Internet versions of these papers and offer e-mail news briefs free of charge. Crain also produces a number of major industry/trade periodicals, including Advertising Age, TelevisionWeek, BtoB, Creativity, Automobilwoche (in German), Automotive News, AutoWeek, American Coin-Op, American Drycleaner, American Laundry News, Business Insurance, Business Insurance Europe, European Rubber Journal, Financial Week, Investment News, Modern Healthcare, Pensions & Investments, Plastics News, RCR Wireless News, Rubber & Plastics News, Tire Business, Urethanes Technology, Waste and Recycling News, and Workforce Management. [edit] HistoryCrain Communications started modestly in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1916, with only three staff members publishing two papers: Class (which later became BtoB) and Hospital Management (later sold). The staff moved to Chicago later in 1916. Crain is now one of the largest privately-owned business publishers in the U.S. with 32 business, trade and consumer publications and related Web sites in North America, Europe and Asia. Crain Communications currently boasts over 1,000 employees in 19 locations spanning the United States, Europe and Asia. The company is now headquartered at 1155 Gratiot Avenue in downtown Detroit. By the late 1950s, the company provided life and medical insurance plans and pensions for its employees. In 2008, Crain shocked the European automotive industry by withdrawing its publication, Automotive News Europefrom the market. The English title was widely read throughout Europe by the industry, and this for was widely perceived to be a caused by the recession's effect on advertising budgets. Now there is simply an online site in its place. The German, US and China editions however, are still in production. This is despite stiff competiton in markets such as China, where Automotive Manufacturer (Cavendish) and Voegel Publications are also produced and circulated.
