The Council of Science Editors (CSE) is a nonprofit professional membership organization. CSE's mission is to serve editorial professionals in the sciences by creating a supportive network for career development, providing educational opportunities, and developing resources for identifying and implementing high-quality editorial practices. In 2008, the CSE Board of Directors adopted the following slogan: “CSE: Education, Ethics, and Evidence for Editors (E4).”

A volunteer Board of Directors leads the Council, with the assistance of several Committees. CSE is managed by Resource Center for Associations located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

[edit] History

Formerly known as the Council of Biology Editors (CBE), in 1999 the organization voted to change its name to Council of Science Editors. The change became effective on January 1, 2000.

The CBE was established in 1957 by the National Science Foundation and the American Institute of Biological Sciences.

[edit] Membership

The membership of CSE comprises editorial professionals who are U.S.-based and international. These professionals are associated with scientific journals and range from editorial assistants to managing editors to editors-in-chief.

International and U.S. dues are the same. A discounted rate is available for students. Inquiries about joining the Council may be directed to CSE@CouncilScienceEditors.org. Additional information may also be found on CSE’s Membership page.

CSE’s annual meeting is held in the spring. This two-and-a-half day meeting features three keynote speakers and over 20 educational sessions. Members or other interested parties may also choose to attend one of the Council’s Short Courses on the day before the meeting officially begins. Short courses include journal editorship, publication management, manuscript editing, and journal metrics. Recent meeting venues have included Atlanta, Vancouver, and Pittsburgh.

[edit] CSE Policies and Endorsements

An earlier edition was titled Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (6th edition published in 1994 under ISBN 0-521-47154-0).
