Cotai Strip

The Cotai Strip is the name of the casino and tourism project at the Cotai District, Macau, inspired by the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The project is invested by Las Vegas Sands, and LVS currently has a trademark application pending with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the name "Cotai Strip".[1] However, the name Cotai Strip is used generically by the press, as well as other Cotai Strip casino companies, such as Melco-PBL[2] and Galaxy Entertainment, in their financial filings and websites.

The name "Cotai" came from the names of the two islands, the Taipa Island and the Coloane Island. Therefore, people often mix up the LVS's project of Cotai Strip with Estrada do Istmo, the actual road connecting Taipa and Coloane, or even broader, the whole district.

Although Galaxy Entertainment's Grand Waldo Hotel commenced operations in 2006 and was the first casino to open on the Cotai Strip, the first big milestone for the Cotai Strip was the opening of Las Vegas Sands’ Venetian Macao on August 28, 2007.

The following properties are open:

  • Grand Waldo Hotel
  • Venetian Resort Macau
  • Four Seasons Hotel Macau
  • City of Dreams. The 6-star Crown Towers is now open. All shows and entertainment are open. Grand Hyatt Macau has opened as well and is accepting bookings from the 1st of November 2009 onwards. Also the hip Hotel group Hard Rock Hotels has opened a hotel in the City of Dreams.

Due to the 2008 financial crisis, up to 11,000 construction workers are to lose their jobs as US gaming giant Las Vegas Sands Corp cuts back its development in Macau.[3] Stephen Weaver, Sands' president for Asia, says on Thursday in Macau, up to 11,000 workers will lose their jobs in Macau after the company halted building projects in the city. Developments of site no. 5 and no. 6 on the strip will be halted.[4] Las Vegas Sands has focused its construction work on the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort in Singapore.
