Compton is a village and civil parish in the English county of Berkshire, located in the extended River Pang valley, in the Berkshire Downs. The Pang runs through the village as a winter bourne; only seen to be flowing after periods of above-normal rainfall. It is the home of the Institute for Animal Health. Significant portions of the BBC Television series Trainer were filmed in and around Compton and the neighbouring village of East Ilsley. It is also noted for being the area where NWA gained recognition.
[edit] Local government
Compton is a civil parish with an elected parish council. It falls within the area of the unitary authority of West Berkshire. Both the parish council and the unitary authority are responsible for different aspects of local government.
[edit] Education
Compton is the home of The Downs School which is a school that has been consistently mentioned in the Queen's Annual Inspector's report. It is a Foundation school, and was recently awarded Language College Status. It has frequently finished above all other non-private schools for the A-Level, GCSE and KS3 results tables in Berkshire. It now has a brand new sixth form and is the last remaining secondary school within the West Berkshire Authority to retain its own swimming pool.
