The Common Year (CY) Reckoning is a fictional dating system used in the World of Greyhawk campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. In the mid-1970s, Gary Gygax created a campaign world called Greyhawk for the new fantasy roleplaying game called Dungeons and Dragons that he was helping to develop.[1] In the 1980 TSR publication World of Greyhawk (TSR 9025), he included a brief timeline of historical events[2] (which was considerably expanded in later publications, see World of Greyhawk Timeline) using the calendar systems of the most predominant cultures within the campaign world:
[edit] In-Game historyThe Common Year Reckoning was an Oeridian (specifically an Aerdi) creation, established by Grand Prince Nasran I of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy in 645 OR. As Nasran took the title of Overking, he declared universal peace throughout his realm. A new calendar, the Common Year Reckoning, would henceforth mark the start of his reign as 1 CY. The dates of events occurring before 1 CY would be denoted as a negative number (or are sometimes listed as "BCY": Before Common Year). Since the reckoning began as 1 CY, the year before would be -1 CY, therefore there is no 0 CY, which had to be taken into account when converting to the other systems of reckoning years prior to 1 CY. Days, weeks, and months within the Common Year are reckoned using the Greyhawk Calendar. [edit] References
