"Coming out (of the closet)" is a figure of speech used to describe a moment or period when a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) person voluntarily discloses his or her sexual orientation or gender identity. By extension, it also means the disclosure of surprising or shameful facts about oneself. An older use of "coming out" denotes a debutante's being introduced into society.
