Colel Chabad is the oldest continuously operating charity of its kind in Israel. It was founded in 5549 (1788 C.E.) by the first Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, who passionately urged his followers to donate to it several times in his magnum opus, the Tanya. It has been headed by each Lubavitcher Rebbe ever since. It is also known as the charity of Reb Meir Ba'al Hanes, which brings special blessings to donors.

Colel Chabad is an umbrella philanthropy supporting a network of soup kitchens, day care centers, dental and medical clinics, camp scholarships, senior centers, interest-free loans, immigrant absorption programs, and other social welfare projects throughout the Land of Israel, and more recently in the former Soviet Union.

It is customary to have a Pushka (Charity Box) in every home and at one's place of work, so that one can give charity at any time - particularly on Friday afternoons prior to Shabbat candle lighting. Colel Chabad charity boxes can be found in many homes around the world.

Every fall, Colel Chabad issues a yearly calendar with a compilation of laws and Chabad customs pertaining to the various weeks of the year. It is available in booklet format (Hebrew and English) as well as in a Hebrew language wall format for Synagogue use.
