In pre-modern medicine, coeliac passion, or coeliaca passio and various other spellings, was a kind of flux of the belly, wherein the food does not pass perfectly crude, but half digested. This is more or less the same as lientery. In the coeliac, the food is sometimes digested, without the chyle's being separated from the excrements. The causes of coeliac were believed to be either the weakness of the ferment of the stomach, the short period of time the food stayed there, the obstruction of the lacteals, or the want of acrity in the bile.
