Clare is a parliamentary constituency in County Clare, Ireland. It is represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas and at currently elects 4 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known in English as TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV).
The constituency's boundaries have varied widely since its formation in 1921, but the boundaries in use for the 2007 general election span almost the entire area of the county, taking in Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush, Newmarket-on-Fergus and Ennistymon. A small part of the south-east of the county around Ballyglass is in the Limerick East constituency[1]
Clare is historically a Fianna Fáil stronghold. The party founder, former Taoiseach and former President Eamon de Valera served the constituency for many decades. His granddaughter recently retired as TD for the area. Other notable former deputies include the former President Patrick Hillery, the long-serving Ceann Comhairle (chair of the Dáil) Patrick Hogan, the former Cabinet Minister Brendan Daly, and Moosajee Bhamjee who was the first muslim member of the Oireachtas.
