This article is about a local government area. For the suburb, see Wanneroo, Western Australia. The City of Wanneroo is a Local Government Area in the northern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, centred approximately 25 kilometres (15.5 mi) north of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of 685.8 square kilometres (264.8 sq mi), and has a population of 110,940 (2006) - making it one of the fastest growing LGAs in Australia. Nearly 15% of the population were born in the United Kingdom, while significant Italian, Macedonian, Chinese and Vietnamese minorities are also located here. The city is bounded by Beach Road to the south, Alexander Drive to the east, Wanneroo Road and Lake Joondalup to the west and the Shire of Gingin to the north, and also includes the coastal suburbs from Mindarie to Two Rocks.
[edit] HistoryPrior to 1902, Wanneroo was part of the Perth Road District which eventually went on to become the City of Stirling. Wanneroo was established on 31 October 1902 as a road board under the District Roads Act 1871. With the passage of the Local Government Act 1960, all road boards became Shires effective from 23 June 1961. On 31 October 1985, Wanneroo attained City status.[2] Until 1 July 1998, Wanneroo included everything north of Beach Road and west of Alexander Drive, but on that date, the shire was bifurcated. The southwestern section was separately incorporated as the City of Joondalup whilst the remainder, including the inland sections as well as the coastal strip north of Kinross, formed a reduced Shire of Wanneroo. It re-attained City status on 1 July 1999.[3] As this was before the local government elections to elect a mayor and councillors, the second incarnation of the Shire did not have a Shire President.[4] [edit] WardsThe City is divided into 7 wards, each of 2 councillors:
