The City of Fremantle is a Local Government Area in southern metropolitan Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The City covers an area of 19.0 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi), and lies about 19 kilometres (12 mi) southwest of the Perth central business district.

The City of Fremantle began in 1871 as the Fremantle Municipal District. On 3 June 1929, it was declared a City - Western Australia's second after Perth, which was declared in 1856. On 3 November 1961, the neighbouring Town of North Fremantle amalgamated into the City.[2][3]

The city has been divided into 6 wards, each electing 2 councillors. Each councillor serves a four-year term, and half-elections are held every two years. The mayor is directly elected.
