[edit] History

Launched in May 2001, Cinema One is a 24-hour Tagalog movie channel created for lovers of Tagalog movies, with titles ranging from classics to blockbusters and award-winning films. Its library covers all genres from romance, drama, comedy, action, horror and fantasy films, produced by country’s top movie outfits. Local productions are also available to cater to viewers’ craving for showbiz updates.

The channel started in 1994 when i-Channel merged with Classic 21 to form Sky 1, which was launched with morning schedules containing public affairs, business and mostly Filipino movies. Seeing audience growth in the movies being shown, in 1998, Sky 1 became Pinoy Blockbuster Channel wherein programming was reformatted to show series of movies produced by local productions. Supported by its large and growing avid viewers, in May 2001 Pinoy Blockbuster became Cinema One, this time showing not only local movies but acquired foreign films as well.

As Cinema One, the channel grew its subscriber base and immediately gained acceptance. For the past three years, it has stayed in the No. 1 spot as the most watched cable channel in the country, dominating all other foreign and local cable channels. As the country's number one cable channel, Cinema One airs all the movies popular and award-winning movies from the library of Star Cinema, Regal Entertainment, Viva Films, Seiko Films, FLT Films, LVN and others. In 2005, the channel ventured into original digital movie productions to showcase the talents of the local independent cinema. Also part of its programming is to update viewers with industry's news in Cinemanews Alert and present biography of showbiz icons in Persona.

As part of ABS-CBN’s global marketing strategy, Cinema One Global was launched last May 2004, to reach out and give quality entertainment to the Filipino communities in North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

The new face of Cinema One with the tagline, “Ang Buhay Natin, Parang Sine”, reinforces its affinity with the movie-loving audience who tune in to experience larger than life entertainment on the small screen.
