Chungju is a city in North Chungcheong province, South Korea. Namsan is a mountain located on the outskirts of the city. The city is famous for the annual martial arts festival held in October. Also of note, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon grew up here.

[edit] FestivalChungju city has held a martial arts festival which is unique in South Korea. The festival started officially in 1998 and is held annually in October. The purpose of the festival is to harmonize the ancient history of martial arts in Korea with martial arts from throughout the world. [1] In 2007, participants from 20 nations performed at the festival. Many sports were shown such as Sambo of Russia, Muay Thai of Thailand, and Arnis of the Philippines.[2] [edit] Chungju LakeChungju Lake is the country's biggest multi-purpose dam that links together Chungju and its neighborhoods. It is a manmade lake with a vast body of water. Woraksan Mt and Songnae valley are located nearby. Additionally, this area has cherished cave area/springs.[3] In 2013 it will host the 2013 World Rowing Championships. [edit] ProductsChungju is famous for its production of apples. The principal reasons being because of the large amount of daylight received and high difference of temperatures. The growing of apples started 300 years ago from China and it was 1912 when the city officially began to plant trees.
