Chula Vista High School (CVHS) in Chula Vista, California, was founded in 1947. It is part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. The school colors are "spartan" blue and white, and the mascot is Sammy Spartan. The school's main rival is the Sweetwater High School Red Devils. The Sweetwater Union High School District's School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is part of Chula Vista High School. The SCPA offers high school "majors" in dance, vocal music, guitar, mariachi, band, orchestra, ballet folklorico, drama, stage tech, and art.
[edit] SportsSports at CVHS make this school "The Home of the Champions". Fall sports offered include football, cross country, girl's volleyball, water polo, girl's tennis, and field hockey. Winter sports offered include basketball, soccer, roller hockey, and wrestling. Spring sports offered include baseball, softball, track, swimming, lacrosse, and golf. The wrestling team is a young team, but has great potential for this upcoming season, with many returning sophomore wrestlers and a returning Freshman wrestler. [edit] Vocal MusicThe Main Attraction (MA) Is the advanced auditioned show-choir (in CVHS). "MA", as they are fondly known as, is directed by Tony Atienza. In 2008, they won GRAND CHAMPIONS at the FAME Hawaii National Show Choir competition!
[edit] BandThe Chula Vista High School Marching and Symphonic Band is headed under the direction of Mr. Zig Kanstul. Also offered is the CVHS Jazz Ensemble, which is directed by Mr. Kanstul as well. Under the tutelage of Mr. and Mrs. Kanstul, the CVHS band as a whole and the colorguard have strived to achieve numerous awards and accolades. They host the Chula Vista Band Review, an annual collaboration of bands from all over Southern California in which the bands compete in parade marches down Broadway in Chula Vista. Every year around the holidays, they perform at Downtown Chula Vista's Starlight Parade. [edit] Mariachi Chula VistaMariachi Chula Vista is the performing group made up of 16 of the most advanced students from the Mariachi Program at CVHS, taught by Mr. Mark fogelquist(MA from UCLA in 1975) Mariachi Chula Vista was formed at Chula Vista High School in September 2001. Since then, Mariachi Chula Vista performs at over 200 events every year and has earned a reputation as one of the best student mariachis in the country. The group has appeared at festivals and educational events in Albuquerque, Tucson, Santa Barbara, Las Cruces, Salt Lake City, Utah, Mesa, Arizona,San Jose San Diego,Victorville Seattle Wenatchee,Sun Valley Idaho,Rawlins, Wyoming,Casper Wyoming Washington D.C, and Guadalajara, Mexico. Mariachi Chula Vista won $5000 first price in San Diego Viejas Competition (2004), first Prize 2004 second prize in 2005, first prize in 2006 at Albuqerque, first prize in 2006 and 2007 in San Juan Capistrano, 2nd place Albuqerque 2008, and 2nd place Anaheim 2008, 1st place open division Alburqueque and 1st place overall 2009. Mariachi Chula Vista will be releasing their first album in 2009. Mariachi Chula Vista has shared stages with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Mariachi Los Camperos,Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, Mariachi Internacional Guadalajara, Mariachi America. Mariachi Chula Vista released thier first album in 2009 and is available for purchase. [edit] SCPA Production DramaAs one of the best programs in the Sweetwater District, Chula Vista High School's Production Drama works hard and has a record to prove it. Taught by Mrs. Joyce Shumaker since its birth in the late 1970s, Production Drama is the advanced drama class. In production drama the students not only perfect their acting talents, but also learn the necessary skills of running a theater such as: box office (both manually and computerized), concession running, house managing, stage managing, directing, and even supporting like Chula Vista's famous Coffee Shoppe.
