China was the host nation of the 2008 Summer Olympics. China ranks on average third in the tallies of medals at the last three Olympic Games. Chinese athletes have won 1,317 world championships and set 1,026 world records.[3] China's first Summer Olympics was at the Games in 1984 and was appearing in its 7th Summer Games in 2008. At the Athens games in 2004, China won 63 medals, including 32 golds, 17 silvers and 14 bronzes. China is represented by the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), and the team of selected athletes were officially known as Team China. As the host country, China received an automatic quota for every competition, though athletes had to meet the qualification standards set by the country's national Olympics committee. A total of 639 athletes qualified for places on the national team, the 2008 game's largest and significantly more than the 407-strong Chinese team that went to Athens in 2004. Chinese athletes from every province qualified to compete in all 28 Olympic sports, marking the first time that Chinese athletes were represented in every sport at an Olympics. Of the total 639 athletes, 469 were competing in their first Olympics, 165 competed in Athens 2004, 37 took part in Sydney 2000 and the average age is 24.2 years old. Three athletes, diver Guo Jingjing, shooter Tan Zongliang and basketballer Li Nan, were making their fourth Olympic appearances, having first competed in Atlanta 1996. China's Olympic delegation totalled 1,099, which included 460 officials.[4][5] According to Olympic protocol, China entered as the last country into the Beijing National Stadium during the Opening Ceremony. They were led by basketballer Yao Ming and Lin Hao, a 9-year-old primary school student who had rescued two schoolmates during the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, which killed around 70,000 people and left 15 million homeless. [edit] MedalistsFurther information: 2008 Summer Olympics medal table, List of 2008 Summer Olympics medal winners, and 2008 Summer Olympics highlights China won 51 gold medals, 21 silvers, and 28 bronzes making this the largest ever medals tally in China's Olympic history and marking the first time China has ranked first.[2] They had entered the biggest team into the Olympics with a huge number of over 600. On Sunday August 17, China achieved its greatest ever Olympic performance when the women's table tennis team defeated Singapore 3-0 in the final to win the country's 33rd gold medal, surpassing the previous best tally of 32 at Athens 2004. That day's gain of eight gold medals is also the largest single-day gain by a national team since the 1988 Summer Olympics. Won all medals in one event Won all gold medals in one sport
Won gold medals in both men's and women's events where only one entry is allowed

China qualified ten boxers for the Olympic boxing tournament, far surpassing its guaranteed quota of at least six spots. The flyweight class was the only in which China did not qualify a boxer. Seven of the ten Chinese qualifiers did so at the world championships.[13] Hu, Maimaitituersun, and Zhang Xiaoping qualified at the first Asian continental qualifying tournament.[14]
