Cheryl Burton (born December 25, 1962) is a news anchor at WLS-TV in Chicago.
[edit] EducationCheryl graduated from Chicago's Lindblom Technical High School in 1980. She attended/graduated from University of Illinois in Campaign/Urbana where she received her B.S. in Phychology and Biology. [edit] Television careerBurton's broadcasting career began at WGN-TV in Chicago from 1989-1990. In 1990, she was a reporter at WMBD-TV in Peoria, Illinois. From 1990 to 1992, she was an anchor at KWCH-TV in Wichita, Kansas. Ms. Burton joined WLS-TV in November 1992 as weekend co-anchor/reporter. In 2003, she was promoted to 5pm weekday co-anchor and 10pm contributing anchor with Ron Magers and Kathy Brock. In April, 2007, Cheryl was inducted into her High School's hall of fame [1]. She also was a Honey Bear, the now defunct cheerleader squad of the NFL Chicago Bears professional football team. She was married for a time to WLS-TV sports anchor Jim Rose. On April 23, 2008, Cheryl along with 5 others were injured when a man, believed to be mentally ill struck them by hitting them in the head and face. This happened when Cheryl was on her dinner break in downtown Chicago according to WLS-TV. These were separate attacks and the man, in his 20s was caught and arrested. Charges have been filed against the man. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. [edit] AccomplishmentsCheryl Burton was the first recipient of the 2005 "Siters in the Spirit" Award. Given as a religious award. Cheryl Burton was the recipient of the 2009 Proctor and Gamble Award for her outstanding community service. In 2008, Burton won the NABJ (National Association of Black Journalist) Salute to Excellence International. In the year of 2004 and 2005, she was honored with the Thurgood Marshall Award. Also in 2004, the Chicago Association of Black Journalist (CABJ) honored with the Russ Ewing Award for her coverage on the E2 nightclub tragedy.In 1998, she was honored for her profession with the Kizzy Image and Achievement Award. Burton received the Phenomenal Woman Award in 1997, and she was also awarded CABJ for coverage on the Million Man March. [1] [edit] Volunteer WorkCheryl Burton does charity work such as being a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of America. She is also public speaker for the students of Chicago Public Schools.
