Fe₃O₄ is a mixed oxide where the iron atoms assume a mixture of Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺. Below 120K, the combination of 2+ and 3+ species arrange themselves in a regular pattern, whereas above that transition temperature the thermal energy is great enough that the species are disordered. ^[1]
