Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry is a Pakistani Christian pilot who as a Flight Lieutenant fought in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war and was honored for his gallantry and courage under fire with the Sitara-e-Jurat. Chaudhry was one of many distinguished Pakistani pilots. During the 1965 war, Chaudhry, and three other pilots, under the leadership of Wing Commander Anwar Shamim, destroyed the Amritsar Radar Station in a daring attack.

Born on 27 August 1941 to the only Christian family of the village Dalwal, located in the Salt Range. He was schooled at St. Anthony’s High School followed by higher studies at the Forman Christian College, Lahore. As an Air Scout he was awarded his glider pilot’s wings in 1956 by the then President of Pakistan, Maj Gen Iskander Mirza at a colourful ceremony in Karachi. He joined the PAF Academy on March 12, 1958. After a distinguished career he retired as a Group Captain in July 1986.[1]

[edit] Mission Amritsar Radar

Group Captain, Col. Cecil Chaudhry was selected for the "Mission Amritsar" on 2 December 1971. The primary mission objective was to destroyed Indian Radar System that was operative near by Bangal bay. On 4 December 1971, Squadron Leaders Amanullah and Rashid Bhatti attacked Amritsar Radar. They met with stiff resistance but managed to shoot down two aircraft, an Indian Folland Gnat and an Su-7. The pilot of the Folland Gnat, Flight Lieutenant J. Preira was Killed in Action. On 8 December, Flight Lieutenant Manzoor Bokhari intercepted an IAF English Electric Canberra and shot it down. On 10 December, Wing Commander Arif Iqbal, while attacking the Indian Harbour of Okha, shot down an Breguet Alizé aircraft of Indian Navy. Its crew members, Lieutenant Commander Ashok Roy, Lieutenant H. S. Sirohi and A.C.O. Vijayan were killed in action. Group Captain Col. Cecil Choudhry under the leaderships of Wing Commander Anwar Shamim and Wing Commander Mervyn Middlecoat, destroyed the amritsar Radar Station successfully and destroyed the IAF aircraft as well as killing their pilots on the station.

However, after completing the operation, the PAF strike command came underattack by the Indian Navy, losing Wing Commander Mervyn Middlecoat and Lt. Changezi, both PAF pilots were killed in action. Wing Comm. Anwar Shamim and Group Capt. Chaudhry responded the action by using their skilled dogfight. The Indian Navy ship was destroyed successfully but lost the Wing Com. Middlecoat and Lt. Changezi.

[edit] After retirement from the Air Force

Cecil Chaudhry is now an educationist and is affiliated with the Punjab Education Foundation. He is also working for the betterment of children with disabilities and Special Education reforms. He is currently the principal of Saint Mary's Academy, Lalazar, Rawalpindi, succeeding Sister Eileen Ann Daffy.[2]
