The Cathedral of St. Duje in Split (Croatian: Katedrala Svetog Duje) is a cathedral in the town of Split, the largest Dalmatian city and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County, in Croatia. Cathedral of St. Duje is a cathedral church of the Catholic Church in Croatia, the seat of Archdiocese of Split-Makarska, with the Archbishop Marin Barišić at the head.
[edit] IntroFor citizens of Split and Croatia, the Cathedral of St. Duje is complex of church (mausoleum) with the bell tower, although church is named after Santa Maria – the Virgin Mary, and Bell Tower is named after Saint Duje. Together they make Cathedral of St. Duje. [edit] Cathedral nameThe cathedral was named after Split patron saint, Saint Duje (Saint Dujam, or Saint Domnius) who was a 3rd century Bishop of Salona. Salona was a large Roman city serving as capital of the Province of Dalmatia. Today it is located near the city of Solin in Croatia. Saint Duje was martyred with seven other Christians in the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian. He was born in Antioch, in modern-day Syria, and beheaded in 304 at Salona. [edit] ArhitectureDiocletian's Palace (Croatian: Dioklecijanova palača) is a building in centre of Split, that was built by the Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century A.D.. On the intersection of two main roads, cardo and decumanus, there is a monumental court Peristyle, from which to the east is only access to Cathedral of St. Duje. Cathedral of St. Duje in Split is composed of three different sections of distinct age. The main part is Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum, which dates from the end of the 3rd century AD. The mausoleum was built like the rest of the palace with white local limestone and marble of high quality, most of which was from marble quarries on the island of Brač, with tuff taken from the nearby river Jadro beds, and with brick made in Salonitan and other factories. Later, in the 17th century chorus was added at the eastern side of the mausoleum. For that purpose the eastern wall of the mausoleum was torn down in order to unify the two chambers. Bell tower of the cathedral of Saint Doimus. The bell tower is the city's main symbol. The Bell Tower was constructed in the year 1100 AD. It was one of the most beautiful romanesque towers. Extensive rebuilding in 1908 radically changed the Bell Tower, and many of the original romanesque sculptures were removed. One of the best examples of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia, are wooden doors on Cathedral of St. Duje. They were made by Andrija Buvina, medieval Croatian sculptor and painter around 1220. Two wings of Buvina wooden doors contains 14 scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, separated by rich ornaments in wood. [edit] Treasury of St. Duje CathedralThe famous were relics of Saint Duje, which were brought to cathedral after his death. Other treasures are also exceptionally valuable. They contain precious collection of sacral art works, like paintings on panel from the 13th century, objects from the goldsmith trade from the 13th century to the 19th century, mass vestments from the 14th century till 19th century. It also contains famous books like the Book of gospels from the 6th century, the Supetar cartulary from the 11th century, and the Historia Salonitana by Thomas the Archdeacon from Split in the 13th century. [edit] NotesCathedral of St. Duje in Split is probably an oldest and smallest cathedral in the World.
