[edit] History

Classes were originally located under St. Peter's Cathedral, Prep's name sake, the school is now located behind the cathedral .

The school was originally located underneath St. Peter Cathedral in what is presently the Prep cafeteria. In 1953, an Auditorium and a three level classroom addition were constructed as enrollment grew. The last major addition to the school was the 1964 science wing addition at the corner of 10th & Myrtle in order to accommodate the growth of the school. Cathedral Prep’s first graduating class of 1925 consisted of just 44 students.

[edit] Academics

Known for it's excellence in academics, Cathedral Prep offers a college prep curriculum that prepares students to handle the academic rigors of college. A variety of courses are offered that challenge students. In addition to the core curriculum, a variety of electives are offered to the students' interests.

[edit] Athletics

Cathedral Prep is a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) in District 10, Region 6. The mascot of Cathedral Prep is the Rambler. Additionally, Prep's student section was called the "best student section in the state" in 2009 by a Pittsburgh Post Gazette writer.[3]Also, every year the Prep basketball team hosts the McDonald's Classic, which has been called "the best four team tournament in the country". [4] Nicknamed the Ramblers, for the "rambling" roses found outside of St. Peter's Cathedral, Prep has received much attention in Pennsylvania and nationally for its athletic programs; Prep has won the following state championships:

[edit] Technology

Cathedral Prep is one of the few high schools in the nation to have a Tablet PC program for all students accepted into the school. All incoming freshmen are leased a Tablet PC which they will use over the four years at the school and then own upon graduation. The computers are connected to the internet via a school-wide WiFi connection.

[edit] Renovations

[edit] Current

Over the last decade, Cathedral Prep has undergone interior renovations to the halls and classrooms of all four floors in its main building. The project, which encompasses new windows, ceilings, walls, lockers, lighting fixtures, carpeting, and a technology infrastructure has a projected completion cost of three million dollars. Money has been accumulated through grants and alumni contributions. Prep has just completed a $1 million renovation to the science wing and auditorium [14].

[edit] Future

Prep has announced plans of a new athletic facility to be built on the former site of the EMI Foundry Building on the southeast corner of 12th & Cherry Streets. The complex will include an athletic field (for use by the football, lacrosse, and soccer teams) with A-Turf; a gymnasium with enough seating to house varsity basketball games (1,800 seats); a 400-seat natatorium; a new wrestling room; weight room; and an 8-lane, all-weather track. The building of the new facility will be part of a $10–12 million dollar capital campaign to update the science hall and auditorium. [15]
