Mario first appeared in the Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong, and subsequently starred in a sequel called Mario Bros.. Since then, he has gone on to become Nintendo's flagship character and mascot, and arguably the most recognized computer and video game character in the world.

The Mario franchise has sold over 180 million units, and is close to passing the 200 million mark.
