Apart from whatever reasons which may prompt writers in general to publish anonymously or under pseudonyms, such as social embarrassment or concerns about risqué or otherwise risky material, women writers have, historically, been in a unique situation: during many periods their access to publishing has been limited by various cultural, social, or legal factors.
