Painters active during the period known as the Dutch Golden Age. Such painters can be considered Dutch or Flemish or both, because during this period, the Low Countries were not yet split into the Netherlands and Belgium. They were a group of autonomous provinces. In the 1580s, many painters from towns located in modern-day Belgium fled to northern towns in modern-day Netherlands to escape religious persecution. It was also quite fashionable for young painters to make a pilgrimage to Italy, where they could study works of Titian and Carravagio, and finish their education by becoming apprentices in large painting workshops.
