Visual Art of the American West is sometimes referred to as "Western Art" by Americans. This relatively new category of art includes paintings, sculptures and sometimes Native American crafts. Initially, subjects included exploration of the western states and cowboy themes. Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell are two artists who captured the "Wild West" on canvas. Presently, the genre flourishes in variety and popularity within the United States. Many designers and decorators in the southwest include "Western Art" in homes and businesses. Although some of the artists who painted Westerns subjects, such as Albert Bierstadt have entered the canon, many other's, particularly "cowboy painters" such as Remington and Russell have not been accepted by, for example, major museums outside of the American West.(Pertaining to Frederic Remington, his works are found in major museums- compare the list found here and major North American museums here, a number of which are outside of the American West; Remington is considered one of the progenitors of Impressionism in North America) Also, much of the subject matter of this art has been criticized by Indigenous North Americans and others as containing racist or triumphalist themes at their expense (for a contrasting view see the essay here). Inconsistently, Native American Crafts were sold throughout Europe by Art dealers for 90% more than what was paid to the artists prior to 2001.
