Carnival of Carnage is the debut studio album by American hip hop group Insane Clown Posse, released on October 18, 1992, by Psychopathic Records. It is the first Joker's Card entry in the group's Dark Carnival saga. The album is meant as a rage against the rich and the government who do not care about the poor neighborhoods of society; Carnival of Carnage is also a term used to describe the ghetto and the idea behind them appearing as clowns to be a personification of what the rich term the lower classes to be a "carnival of freaks," as Violent J stated during a Fox News interview in 1995, saying: "We represent people that were born without the silver spoon in their mouth but instead with a rusty fork...all these people, they view the underclass, they view the poor people as like carnival freaks, you know what I mean? And that's why we wear the clown make-up, we're representing them, we're representing the people that people would shove their kids away from and people would turn away, not look at—that's who we are."
[edit] ProductionThe cover of Carnival of Carnage was drawn by Joseph Utsler, who would later create artwork for the rest of the albums in the Joker's Cards series.[2] Original Insane Clown Posse member and brother of Utsler, John Kickjazz, appeared on "Your Rebel Flag," "Psychopathic," ""Blacken' Your Eyes," "Wizard of the Hood," "Red Neck Hoe," and "Taste."[3] "Carnival of Carnage" was originally recorded by Esham, but he pronounced "carnage" as "carnicks" and refused to redo it, prompting Joseph Bruce to do it himself.[3] The final version of "Carnival of Carnage" was recorded over a reversed recording of the original, thus if played backwards, Esham's original recording can be heard. Awesome Dre was originally going to do a verse on "Taste," but while waiting in the studio for him to arrive, Insane Clown Posse saw Esham, who suggested he appear on the track instead, for the same amount of money as Awesome Dre, and Insane Clown Posse allowed him to record a part. Esham was paid $500 for his appearance.[3] Kid Rock demanded a hundred more than Esham, and was thus paid $600 to appear on "Is That You?"[3] He showed up to record "Is That You?" intoxicated, but he re-recorded his vocals and record scratching the following day.[3] [edit] ReleaseThe album was remastered and re-released in 1998 by Island Records as part of the deal with The Great Milenko, but because of uncleared samples, the tracks "Blackin' Your Eyes" and "Night of the Axe" were absent from the reissue. The original version continues to be sold by Psychopathic Records.[4] [edit] ReceptionCarnival of Carnage sold 17 copies on its release date.[5] The album received one star out of five in The New Rolling Stone Album Guide.[1] [edit] Track listing
