Created in March 2009, Carnalpedia is "the largest sex encyclopedia on the Internet".^[1] The name is a combination of carnal knowledge and encyclopedia, and is free-of-cost to view or edit. Carnalpedia is not free to distribute.

While the largest encyclopedia on sex, Carnalpedia lacks many key topics on sex and consists almost entirely of articles related to the sex industry, with many of the articles on pornographic actors and pornographic films provided by AEBN. This narrow focus is similar to Wikipedia's founding in 2001, with the original source of articles from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, providing an encyclopedia that also lacked articles on many key topics. Also like Wikipedia, Carnalpedia is a wiki, which enables users to expand existing articles and create new articles.

Carnalpedia uses Restricted to Adult labels which allows software programs such as NetNanny to block inappropriate content from underage visitors.
