The Canada Masters (also long known as the Canadian Open), currently sponsored as the Rogers Cup, is an annual tennis tournament held in Canada. The men's competition is a Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour. The women's competition is a Premier Tournament on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The competition is played on hard courts. The two competitions are currently held in separate weeks in the July-August period. The events alternate from year-to-year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto. In odd-numbered years, the men's tournament is held in Montréal, while the women's tournament is held in Toronto, and vice-versa in even-numbered years. The current singles champions are Andy Murray and Elena Dementieva. [edit] History Rexall Centre, the current venue for when the tournament is held in Toronto. The event has a long and illustrious history. The men's tournament began in 1881, and was held at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, while the women's competition was first held in 1892. Of the major tennis tournaments in the world today, only Wimbledon and the US Open have been around as long. The 1989 tournament was memorable because two Canadian tennis players, Grant Connell and Andrew Sznajder, reached the quarter-finals of the event. They were eliminated by Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi during that round, however. Lendl went on to beat Agassi in the semis and then win the tournament over John McEnroe. Lendl has been the tournament's most successful player of all-time, reaching the final nine times and walking away with titles in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1988 and 1989. The tournament was sponsored for a number of years by tobacco brands. In the 1970s, Rothmans International was the chief sponsor, followed by Player's Limited in the 1980s, and then Du Maurier from 1997-2000. Federal legislation, however, then came into effect that banned tobacco advertising. Rogers took over as the new presenting sponsor. The women's tournament has recently been moved to just before the US Open grand slam. While the ATP has mandated participation for the men's tournament, as a Masters Series title, the WTA has no such requirement. Consequently, the Rogers Cup has suffered in recent years due to the absence of top female players such as the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena) and Maria Sharapova, who often opted at last minute to sit out (claiming suspicious injuries) and rest for the upcoming US Open.[1][2] Currently, the Toronto tournament is held at the Rexall Centre, York University, with no presenting sponsor, with former presenting sponsor American Express dropping out before the 2008 tournament. The Montreal tournament is held at the Stade Uniprix and has National Bank of Canada as its presenting sponsor. In 2009, the Rogers Cup become a "1000-level" series event, replacing the Masters Series title. The Rogers Cup continues to attract a mandatory player field, and as a "1000-level" event it is backed by new rules and sanctions. The women's tournament also underwent major changes which improved player turnout, and its new status as a "Premier 5" tournament ensures the participation of all top players, so players can be fined or suspended for last-minute absences (exceptions are allowed for legitimate injuries).[3][4] However, the 2009 women's tournament witnessed six of the top ten seeds eliminated by the second round, leading to speculation that these high-ranked players were not giving it all in the Rogers Cup, instead only attending to avoid suspension for the next tournament.[5][6] In 2011, the Rogers Cup will go under another major transformation, that will see both the men's and women's tournaments run in the same week.
