Callan Ward (born 10 April 1990) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Western Bulldogs Football Club in the Australian Football League from 2008. He made his debut against St. Kilda on the 8th of June 2008, collecting 12 disposals and finishing with one goal. Recruited from his TAC Cup team, the Western Jets, Ward attracted attention from the Bulldogs as a medium sized defender who hails from local suburb Spotswood[1]. Ward nominated for the 2007 AFL National Draft. Leading into the draft, five player managers pursued to represent him, and a week out from the draft he decided with Paul Connors, who also represents Chris Judd. He was selected by the Bulldogs with their second selection (#19 overall) at 10.12am after being a mere 20 days old enough to nominate for the draft[2]. In his debut year, he played six games whilst juggling full-time football and his last year of high school. He hd an outstanding season in 2009 playing in the mould of Tony Liberatore. He tackles with aggression, marks well and knows how to kick a goal. He is a team player and can be used in a variety of positions including a taging role. He is a great role model for kids and will be even better in 2010. [edit] PersonalIn 2008 he completed Year 12 at Williamstown High School. Outside of his football life, he is currently undertaking Certificates 3 and 4 in Fitness and endeavours to become a personal trainer with those qualifications.[3] Callan went to primary school at St Margaret Marys, in Spotswood, where his mother also taught at as a librarian. His parents are separated and he shares his time between his mother, Kerri Ward, and father, Greg Ward, who live around the corner from each other. Ward spends 3 days a week with his father.[4] He has a twin sister, Aysha and two older sisters, Mickayla and Kiandra. Mickayla is a state league netballer with VU Flames. Kiandra is a pub manager of The Wick Inn in Brighton, England. Callan is the grandson of former South Melbourne player, Bill Gunn, who played 104 games for them from 1952 to 1959. He also captained them in the 1955 season. Callan's father played under-19s at Footscray, then more than 100 games for Yarraville in the old VFA before finishing with Spotswood. He currently works at a pulp and paper mill in Reservoir, two days, two nights, then three days off.[5] [edit] References
