Infobox references

Cadmium sulfate is used widely in industries for the electroplating of cadmium in electronic circuits. It is also known as the hydrated form, CdSO4.8/3H2O. Cadmium sulfate is very rarely found naturally in from of tetrahydrate mineral called drobecite and as basic salt in the mineral Niedermayrite. It is used as a pigment.

[edit] Preparation

Cadmium sulfate is prepared by the reaction of cadmium metal or its oxide or hydroxide with dilute sulfuric acid:

CdO + H2SO4 → CdSO4 + H2O

[edit] Octahydrate

The octahydrate of cadmium sulfate, 3CdSO4·8H2O, is a colorless, odorless monoclinic crystal. It is made by the reaction of sulfuric acid with metal cadmium or with cadmium oxide. Its uses are as a pigment or as an electrolyte in a Weston standard cell.
