The Most Outstanding Player Award is annually rewarded to the best player in the Canadian Football League. The Most Outstanding Player award can be compared to the National Football League's Most Valuable Player, otherwise known as the "MVP" award. This is the final award given during the CFL Awards banquet, which takes place the week before Grey Cup weekend in the same city where it is hosted. The two nominees for the award are the Terry Evanshen Trophy winner from the East Division, and the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy winner from the West Division. The winner of the award is chosen by the Football Reporters of Canada.[1]

The award was created in 1953 as the Schenley Award to honour the most outstanding player in Canadian Rugby Union, the fore-runner of the CFL. New categories were added over the years: Most Outstanding Canadian (1954), Most Outstanding Defensive Player (1955), Most Outstanding Rookie (1972), and Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman (1974). Schenley left the sponsorship of the awards in 1988 but are often still casually referred to as such.[1]
