[edit] History

The station was launched in 1944 on AM 1240 with the call sign CBH. Prior to its launch, CBC Radio programmed aired on private affiliate CHNS 960 and its shortwave relay CHNX-SW 6130 kHz (in the 49m band). CBH's initial power was only 100 watts and remained at that level for 18 years. In 1948, the frequency was changed to 1330, and then to 1340 in 1960. In 1963, the power was upgraded to 10,000 watts with the station moving to clear channel 860.

In 1977, due to reception problems in parts of Halifax, a temporary FM rebroadcaster, CBHA-FM, was established on FM 90.5. The temporary station appeared to become permanent however as the CBC did not have the funds required to upgrade CBH's AM signal. Eventually in 1989, the AM station was shutdown, and CBHA-FM became the main CBC station in Halifax.

[edit] Local programming

The station's local programs are Information Morning and Main Street in the afternoon. The station serves the Nova Scotia mainland through a network of rebroadcast transmitters, whose schedule is identical to the signal out of Halifax, with the exception of a regional program weekday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00. The Halifax station airs an additional hour of "Main Street" during this time; the rebroadcast transmitters air a regional program called "Close To Home" which is also heard on CBC Radio One stations throughout New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Their studios are located on the intersection of Bell, Sackville, and South Park streets in Halifax.
