By Hook or by Crook is a 2002 female buddy film by writers/directors/actors Harriet Dodge and Silas Howard and produced by Steak House. The film uses elements of what can only be described as butch noir, a gritty, humorous, look at female masculinity. Premiering in its finished version at the Sundance Film Festival, it was met with acclaim from audiences and critics alike. The movie's title implies that the characters will get any task done by any means possible.

By Hook or by Crook (film) chronicles the tale of two unlikely friends who commit petty crimes as they search for a path to understanding themselves and the outside world. Silas Howard plays Shy, a butch who leaves her small town after the death of her father and heads to the big city to live a life of crime. Along the way, she encounters Valentine, a quirky adoptee in search of her birth mother. An immediate kinship is sparked and they become partners in crime. Suffering money troubles, emotional problems, and physical confrontations, the duo face their issues head on and learn to trust each other and support each other in pursuit of their goals.

Carla Bozulich of the Geraldine Fibbers wrote the score for the film. The soundtrack also features the song that Carla Bozulich co-wrote with the Geraldine Fibbers, "Lilybelle", that was later covered by Kiki and Herb.
