The Burleigh Heads Rugby League Football Club are one of the oldest rugby league football clubs on the Gold Coast. Originally formed in 1934 playing out of Rudd Park, the club relocated to Pizzey Park in 1971, their current home ground. Over the past decade the club have worked tirelessly to improve facilities both on and off the field and now have one of the best Rugby League complexes in Queensland.[citation needed] The Leagues Club opened in 1991 and has developed into one of the most successful licensed clubs on the Gold Coast, boasting a membership base of around 20,000. Renovations to the Leagues Club were completed in 2004 and with further extensions on the way, Burleigh Bears will continue to grow. Currently the Burleigh Bears field an A Grade and Colts side in the FOGS Cup, which is a South East Queensland competition and a Wizard Queensland Cup side that plays in the State Wide Competition. The Queensland Cup is the strongest competition outside of the NRL and getting stronger every year. They also have three teams playing in the Local Gold Coast Competition: an A Grade, Reserve Grade and an under-19 side. The Burleigh Bears have been one of the most successful clubs since joining the Queensland Cup in 1997. They have only missed the semi-finals on three occasions. They won our first premiership in 1999 and repeated that effort again in 2004. We have played in three of the last eight Grand Finals and are one of the most respected and well supported teams in the Queensland Cup.[citation needed] Burleigh has one of the biggest Junior Clubs in Queensland and boasts over 700 registered players. In 2009 The Burleigh Bears signed a deal with The Brisbane Broncos to become one of six feeder clubs for the NRL Powerhouses.
