Bumpits is a plastic hair accessory used to create better volume, which was formed by Kelly Fitzpatrick in 2008.[1]

Contents

[edit] Overview

Bumpits were created by Kelly Fitzpatrick in 2008 and have been extremely successful in sales.[1] Big Happie Hair’s Bumpits, packaged in a set of four, are sold for less than 20 dollars today.[2]

[edit] Creation

Kelly Fitzpatrick, a former mortgage broker from San Joaquin Valley, came up with the original idea known as “Bumpits.” As house sales dropped and prices fell, Fitzpatrick's company, The Loan Broker, lost business, and having been a hairdresser for roughly 14 years, decided to attempt to create a hair product to make up for her loss. She had noted that most of her customers complained that they could never achieve simple and non-damaging volume in her hair. She considered the idea of bumpits for several years, and finally made it a reality in 2008.[1] She is currently the president of the Fresno Company known as Big Happie Hair.[3] Bumpits have also been a huge success due to the cheap price, easy instructions, and relatively quick results.[1]

The head of Jet Mold Products of Fresno (manufacturer of Bumpits) also played a small role in the production of Bumpits. He had tested the Bumpit in his own hair and was amazed at how it had actually gripped onto his hair. Therefore, men also played a role and had their own positive review.[3]

[edit] Materials

The crescent shaped Bumpits are made of plastic, which Kelly Fitzpatrick worked with Jet Mold Products of Fresno to create.[1] The Bumpits have tiny grippers that hide under the hair.[3] The tiny grippers on the Bumpit then secure onto the lightly teased hair.[2] The plastic ranges in several colors including light blonde, black, light blonde/dark brown, and brunette so that the pieces would blend better with each person’s hair.[2] Sizes vary as well with regular, rock star, and miniature choices.[1]

[edit] Instructions for use

The goal of Bumpits is to create more volume in the hair without damaging backcombing. The three steps include lifting a section of the hair, placing the Bumpit on the crown of the head, and brushing the hair strategically over it.[4] In some instances, it is encouraged to gently tease the hair at the crown if the Bumpit is not as secure as the user would want it.[5] Bumpits can be placed at either the front of the scalp or the back to achieve some of the more “popular” hairstyles.[6]

[edit] In popular culture

Bumpits are creating a buzz due to the fact that types of bouffants are coming back into fashion.[6] Many celebrities and political figures, including Sarah Palin specifically, have been mirrored for their mini-beehive hairstyles.[2]
