[edit] Overview

It is 10.7 miles (17.2 km) north-east of Charing Cross and near the boundary with the London Borough of Redbridge.

It was featured on the ITV1 series Essex Wives a programme about women in the area who were in business or considerably wealthy. With Loughton and Chigwell, it is said[weasel words] to form part of the Essex golden triangle of wealthy places.

Buckhurst Hill is served by two London Underground stations, Buckhurst Hill tube station (Zone 5) and Roding Valley tube station (Zone 4) which are now on the Central Line. The railway line was opened in 1856 as part of the Eastern Counties Railway and it was the middle-class development that resulted from this line that gave Buckhurst Hill its typical Victorian ambience.

From 1890 to 1933, it had an Urban District Council of its own. In 1933 to 1974 it formed together with Loughton and Chigwell the Chigwell Urban District. Since 1996 it has again had a parish council of its own.

It is also home to Buckhurst Hill Football Club.

The Parish Church is St John's (Church of England), a Victorian building with a large congregation. It has been described as "a friendly and lively Anglican church". There are three services every Sunday, and a variety of midweek activities. The funeral of Jade Goody was held at the church.

Nearest places:

It is the birthplace of British politician Jack Straw. The Labour cabinet minister Richard Crossman also came from Buckhurst Hill.
