Kevin James[1] Mann (born January 10th, 1972), better known by his stage name Brotha Lynch Hung, is an American rapper from Sacramento, California.[2]

Lynch first began rapping in 1986 under the name Ice Cold, along with his half-brother Sicx (then known as Strobe Light). Around 1989, by the suggestion of Sicx, he changed his name to fit his rapping style and ability to take out other rappers in battle, becoming Brotha Lynch Hung. He signed with Ced Singleton's Black Market Records for his 1992 debut EP, 24 Deep. [3] His 1995 album Season of da Siccness graphically chronicled a life of drug use and sale, promiscuity, ultraviolence, rape along with heavy themes of cannibalism. It was certified Gold.

Brotha Lynch Hung also appeared in the film Now Eat along with Sicx in 2000.[4] Lynch has appeared as a featured artist on over 100 tracks with various artists.[5]

[edit] Early Years

Kevin James Mann was born in Sacramento, California. Grew up in the rough part of Sacramento which he credits to in his songs, specifically "garden Block", the nickname he gave to the street he lived on. Believed to be referring to somewhere on the South side of Sacramento which was plagued with a lot of violence and gang activity at that point and time. Mann eventually joined a local crip gang and rapped about his accounts of living a gangster’s life in his songs, especially on his earlier albums.

Mann started rapping at 13. Identified himself as a loner, and figured that writing rhymes was the easiest way for him to be listened to by others. Began to freestyle rap against others within his high school and eventually began to seek out other competitors from around the city. Had a real good habit of "executing" his opponents lyrically. Some of his early inspirations in rap where east coast artists such as Rakim or Slick Rick

He gradually developed his own style as he continued to rap, which he described as keeping it real. "I'll say what I wanna say style." Got involved with his first rap group around the age of 17, with X-raided And SicX, fellow crips from the "garden block area" whom now are in prison doing time.

Together they recorded a few independent albums including "Niggas in Black", one of their first albums together which was recorded in 1991. In his own words he describes this album that was made before any record deal was in place, as “some of my best work ever”. Also appeared on X-raided's first solo album, Psycho Active

Also appeared on X-raideds first album Psycho active in 1990. Two years later X-raided would be convicted of the murder of Patricia Harris, and was sentenced to 31 years in prison.

In 1992 Mann hooked up with Cedric Singleton, the executive producer of Black Market Records and recorded his first EP, 24 deep. The album reached the top 100 on the billboard charts. Album garnered Mann as a major contender in the underground rap scene of the west coast.
