It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. [edit] Boundaries The constituency is in Brighton, in the South East of England. It is named after the Royal Pavilion situated within its boundaries. Historically a safe Conservative seat, it swung heavily (after boundary changes) in Labour's favour in their 1997 landslide victory. Labour retained the seat in subsequent elections but has seen its vote share fall markedly, with the Green Party increasing in popularity during the same period, taking over 20% of the vote in a third place finish in 2005. [edit] History The constituency was created in 1950 out of the Brighton constituency, which Brighton, Pavilion's first Member of Parliament, William Teeling, had previously represented. [edit] Candidates The constituency is regarded as the Green Party's principal target for a parliamentary seat. The Green Party leader, Caroline Lucas was selected as their PPC for the next general election. David Lepper has said he will not contest the next general election, and the local Labour Party has selected Nancy Platts to succeed him as Labour candidate. On Wednesday 18th November 2009 Charlotte Vere was selected as the Conservative Party candidate at an open primary attended by local Party members and residents.
