Briankle G. Chang (born 1954) is Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is considered the first scholar to bring to bear the ideas of Jacques Derrida on the field of communication studies.[1] His ideas on the relationship between deconstruction and communication studies were first expressed in several essays in 1980s and later published in his book, Deconstructing Communication: Representation, Subject, and Economies of Exchange (1996) [2]. He was born and raised in Taiwan and received his post-graduate training in the United States. For the past 15 years, he has been a faculty member in the Department of Communication, University of Massachusetts , Amherst, where he teaches in the areas of cultural studies and philosophy of communication. He has published in such journals as British Journal of Aesthetics, Cultural Critique, differences, International Philosophical Quarterly, History of European Ideas, and others. His translation of Jacques Derrida’s Monolinguisme de l’autre into Chinese appeared in 2000. While continuing his engagements with writers such as Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy[1], Jean-Luc Marion, and others, his recent works are influenced visibly by the writings of Werner Hamacher.
