Brenham Independent School District is a public school district based in Brenham, Texas (USA). Located in Washington County, a very small portion of the district extends into Austin County. The district serves the City of Brenham and the Washington community in Washington County.
[edit] Schools[edit] High School (Grades 9-12)Brenham High School was the first accredited high school in the state of Texas. The current principal of Brenham High School is Mr. Steve Skrla. Mr. Kirk Still is currently the sophmore principal. Mrs. Allison Collins is currently the junior principal. Mr. Don Silvey currently serves as the senior principal. Mr. Michael Watts is the current freshman principal. The mascots of Brenham High School are the Cubs and Cubettes. Brenham High has sent many athletic teams to the state level of competition. These teams include, but are not limited to, football, baseball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, swimming, and cross country. One of the most notable names to come out of Brenham High Athletics is Limas Sweed, currently a Rookie wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also, Jarrett Lee, quarterback for the LSU Tigers, graduated from Brenham High School in 2007. The Brenham High athletic director is currently Coach Glen West. Jeff Clayton coaches the Brenham Swim team. He took over in 2008 coming from Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas where he won coach of the year and several state titles. The 2009 Swim team was led by Senior Marshall "Will" Haley. Charles Emley took over the head coach position of the tennis team in 2008. He coached the doubles team of Austin Miller & Matthew Prenzler, taking them to the second round of regionals in 2009. "I haven't ever had a team make it to the second round" Emley said when asked about the team's performance. Erik Lane Coaches the Soccer team taking them to the state tournament four times and making it to the final game three times (2001,2004 and 2008). The 2009 team is led by Michael Linden in Defense. Michael is a senior and is known for his ferocious tenacity and outreach to the less fortunate in the Brenham community. Michael says "God has blessed me with these amazing skills on the soccer pitch it only seems natural to give back to his children". Brenham High is also the home of the Brenham Cub Band. The Cub Band has been a 4A Honor Band Finalist and 4A State Marching Finalist. The Cub Band has also hand numerous players make the TMEA 4A All State Band, as well as many more advancing to TMEA region band and area band. The Brenham Cub Band is currently under the direction of Eric Rettig. He is assisted by band directors Micheal Hanson and Bryan Winningham. Brenham High School has an amazing JROTC program. The program is a Marine Corps JROTC and has won numerous awards for drill, shooting team, and color guard. The program's Senior Marine Instructor is Captain Kenneth J. Tofel. The program has received plenty of support and grants. With the grant the program received they constructed a Marine Corps JROTC Building. The building has state of the art equipment and an amazing shooting range used for Air Rifle and Pistol Shooting. Brenham High School is also the home of the Brenham High School Chorale Choir, also the Brenham High School Encore Choir. The Chorale choir has been a mixed choir consisting of at least 20 students and 5 students to each voice part. In the year 2008 the Chorale choir receive all 1's (ones) at the U.I.L Concert and Sight-reading Competition. Under the Direction of Carey O'Rarden, pianist Pam Floyd, along with Timpani player from the High School Band. The choir also competes in the All-State competition for TMEA, many students have made it to the regional section, as well as pre-area. The last student to make the All-State choir was Kory Merton in the year 2007, the last person before him to make state was 20 years before. The Encore Choir is a newer choir consisting of the best vocalist from the Chorale choir. They have just recently became a Madrigal choir, but before that they were a pop/jazz choir, consisting of no more than 12 students 3 in each voice part. Brenham High School is also the home of the Brenham High School Drama Department under the direction of Andy Hart. Every year the department dazzles audiences with musicals such as, Bye Bye Birdy, Grease, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler On the Roof, Cinderella, and many more. They also have competed in the U.I.L One-Act Play Competition as the name explains they create a One-Act version of a Two-Act play and compete against other schools in their levels. A few plays in the past have been, Little Women, The Song of Bernadette, Ordinary People, and Steel Magnolias. Brenham High School has multiple AP classes and programs.
