Boston Spa School and specialist Sports College (formerly Boston Spa Comprehensive School) is a mixed-gender school aged 11–19 years old on Clifford Moor Road in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, England. It is larger than other secondary schools in the area, with 1,880 students on roll, including 350 in the sixth form.
[edit] HistoryPrevious to the school, the village had a secondary modern school on High Street. The comprehensive opened in 1973. An arson attack in 2001 destroyed sections of the P.E department. It was subsequently refurbished. It was made a specialist sports college just under a decade ago[when?], with outside backing from notable organisations, primarily Leeds United A.F.C.. It has led to the subsequent partnerships with both the Leeds United Male and Female academies. Since 2006, the school has been headed by the acting, Christopher Walsh, a former Deputy-Headteacher. As former Headteacher Dr. Alun Rees has been on a extended four-year secondment with the Leeds Education Authority (LEA), Mr Walsh has remained as Headteacher. [edit] Location & Student populationThe school is located in a largely rural and semi rural area, approximately four miles from Wetherby. The school community is predominantly white British. The largest minority ethnic group is Indian and Pakistani. The West Oaks School, a school for children with learning difficulties, is also supported by the school. [edit] Academic performanceJust under 9% of students have been identified as having specific learning difficulties and/or disabilities, which is well below average. Very few students join or leave school at times other than in Year 7, or at the end of Year 11. In fact, as of 2008/09, there was a record of around 200 students staying on to join the Sixth-form. In both the academic years 2007-2008 & 2008-2009 GCSE and A-Levels results were very high, & so became one of the top ten schools within the City of Leeds LEA & the Sixth-form is now placed in the top 20% of national sixth-form colleges academically. The school was awarded specialist sports college status in 2000 and successfully achieved re-designation of this status in 2004. Currently, it is also the base for the Leeds United Ladies football club. As well as this, in 2007, the school was one of only two schools in England to be awarded the Investors in Pupils award, as well as many other accolades, including having a so-said 'Hot' Sixth form. In January 2009, the school received one million pounds from Education Leeds, so as to build a new auditorium with an upstairs-downstairs cafe. The school has also recently announced the building of a new indoor Tennis complex. [edit] Notable alumni
