[edit] Plot

Mata Nui, the Great Spirit of the Matoran universe on Aqua Magna, has been exiled from his home by his 'brother,' the evil Makuta Teridax. Teridax took over his gigantic robot body and placed his spirit inside the legendary Mask of Life that has been recently sought after by friend and foe alike. Teridax then banishes the mask into orbit in order to prevent Mata Nui from interfering with his takeover of the Matoran Universe.

The mask crash lands on a planet called Bara Magna, a remote, decaying desert wasteland. A swarm of Scarabax Beetles aaproach the mask and fled when it began to glow. Only one remained behind. The mask creates a body for Mata Nui and he picks up the Scarabax, who touches his mask. Upon doing so, the beetle changed into a living shield. Just then, a savage being called a Vorox attacked Mata Nui. The beast eventually broke its stinger on the shield and fled. Mata Nui picks up the stinger just as a vehicle carrying a villager named Metus shows up. The fast-talking Agori takes Mata Nui to Vulcanus as he tells the former Great Spirit about life on Bara Magna. Local villages scavenge for what remained after an ancient disaster and they settle disputes by sending warriors called Glatorian to fight in an Arena. Metus introduces Mata Nui to Raanu, the Agori leader of Vulcanus. There was a battle going between two Glatorian, Strakk and Ackar of the Ice and Fire tribes respectively. Strakk was eventually defeated, but gets up and fells Ackar after conceding, a move that would ultimately get him banished. Mata Nui intervenes and gets beaten down by the angry Strakk. While using the broken Vorox stinger to defend himself, the mask transforms it into a sword. Mata Nui gets up and quickly downs the surprised Strakk. Mata Nui’s actions earned him the respect of Ackar.

Metus sees this and tries to hire Mata Nui, who refused. Ackar then, introduces Mata Nui to Kiina, a feisty female Glatorian from the village of Tajun. In exchange for showing the two Glatorians a secret cavern underneath Tajun, Kiina wished to leave Bara Magna with Mata Nui. On the way to Tajun, the three Glatorians get ambushed by a giant scorpion-like creature called a Skopio, as well as a band of Bone Hunters, who were told the Glatorian's location by an Agori traitor. Together, the Glatorians trap the Skopio and Bone Hunters under a rock-slide and made it safely to Tajun. However, the village had already fallen at the hands of the Skrall army combined with the Bone Hunters. A rookie Glatorian, Gresh, had been trying to defend the village and was badly injured. Kiina takes them to the hidden cavern where they meet Berix, a thief and suspected traitor. While Berix tended to Gresh, the other three discovered a hidden chamber containing a picture of the robot that was once Mata Nui's body.

The three practice as they travel to Gresh's village, Tesara, while Ackar teaches Mata Nui how to have an edge in combat. To the protests of Raanu and Metus, the four Glatorian stop a fight between Vastus and Tarix, telling the crowd of Agori that they must unite their villages against the threat of the Bone Hunter-Skrall alliance. Mata Nui proved his worth to the crowd by transforming Tarix's weapon. In the Hot Springs on the outskirts, Kiina follows a mysterious figure. It turns out to be Berix, who is captured along with Kiina by the Bone Hunters and the true traitor. Back in Tesara, Raanu and Metus alert the Glatorian to Kiina and Berix's kidnapping. Mata Nui ignores Ackar's and Gresh's offers to help and sets off for the Skrall camp on his own.

Kiina and Berix were held a suspended cage near the mouth of a cave. Mata Nui confronted Tuma, the Skrall leader and challenges him to a one-on-one fight. At first, it seemed that Tuma had the upper hand. However, Mata Nui was really using Ackar's teachings to find a weakness in Tuma's back and attacks it with fervor, defeating him. As he claims Tuma's shield in victory and freed Kiina and Berix, the traitor, now revealed to be Metus, appeared. He explains how he got the nomads and the Skrall to unite under him. Now in control of the army, he ordered the Skrall and Bone Hunters to kill off the three. Just then the Skrall and Bone Hunters were attacked by an immense being composed of Scarabax Beetles. A squadron of Agori and Glatorian arrived, and together, they fought back vigorously. Mata Nui sees Metus fleeing in his vehicle and pursued him. Before the traitor could escape, some Vorox overturn Metus' chariot, sending him to Mata Nui's feet. Mata Nui picks him up and pressed him to the Mask of Life. Metus was transformed into a serpent as a representation of what he truly is. As he slithers away, he hissed that his united army cannot be defeated. Realizing this to be the key to winning, Mata Nui has the Glatorians combine their powers against the waves of Skrall and Bone Hunters. The defeated army then flee.

As the Glatorian watched the combined efforts of the Agori as they pulled their villages together, the Glatorian and Berix notice that the completed villages formed the shape of a large robotic body, similar to the one that Mata Nui's spirit once inhabited. To further this, Berix pulls out a coin with the Unity-Duty-Destiny symbol, the Bara Magna symbol, and the Mask of Life symbol on one side, and the Skrall symbol on the other. Berix also pulls out a Skrall shield and deduces that they are similar to each other and form a map. With this information in hand, Mata Nui, Ackar, Kiina, Gresh, and Berix prepare to set off for their next adventure.

[edit] Trivia

  • Unlike the previous three Bionicle films, The Legend Reborn was distributed by Tinseltown Toons instead of Miramax Films. The same will apply to the sequels.
  • Interestingly, all the Matoran in the intro appear to be Av-Matoran as they not only sport the features of the sets (namely thruster packs and slightly taller forms than previous Matoran) but they also bear a very strong resemblance to the sets, most notably: Photok, Tanma, and Gavla.
  • Not all of the released sets for 2009 appear in the film. Examples include--but are not limited to--Malum, Gelu, and the Zesk.
  • The island of Mata Nui as seen in the film is non-canon; in the storyline, it had become a barren wasteland due to the Bohrok swarms' activity (in fact, this was needed for the Mata Nui robot to stand upwards).[1]
  • The movie's intro features the Mask of Life flying out of an entire galaxy from Aqua Magna to Bara Magna. In Bionicle canon, the former is simply a moon of the latter, and would actually take much less time than the opening credits depict.
