Bienno is a Italian comune of 3.609 abitanti[1] in Val Camonica, province of Brescia, in Lombardy.

The village is located in Val Grigna, on the northern side of the river Grigna. It is bounded by other communes of Bagolino, Berzo Inferiore, Bovegno, Breno, Cividate Camuno, Collio, Prestine.

In 1295 there was a quarrel with Bovegno on some grass in height.

On January 25 1350 the bishop of Brescia invests iure feuds for a tenth of the rights in the territories of the Municipality Bienno (vicinia) and men of Bienno, what happened back in 1295, 1336, and later in 1388, 1423 and 1486). It also confirmed the August 20 1423.

In 1391 the land of Bienno, Ghibelline, underwent an extensive pillaging of cattle caused by the Guelphs Camuni led by Baroncino Nobili of Lozio.

The peace of Breno of 31 December 1397 the representative of the community of Bienno Lanini Bertolino di Martino, is on the bank Ghibelline.

Between 1805 and 1815 the town of Bienno was united to Prestine and called "Bienno with Prestine."

Bienno is part of the club of "The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" creation of the Council of Tourism of the Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI).

[edit] Religious architecture

  • The parish church, dedicated to Saints Faustino and Giovita, rebuilt in the early years of 1600 strictly in accordance with the rules counterreformation; single nave with six side altars; impressive painting cycle for most of Giovanni Mauro della Rovere (the Fiamminghino); beautiful cleared in 1647 of wrought iron; body of seventeenth-century origins antegnatiane and remodeled by Serassi.
  • The smallest church in the lower part of the old town, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata (once called Santa Maria degli Orti). For a single nave, it contains frescoes of great value products during the sixteenth century by various artists, including Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo and, above all, Girolamo di Romano, said Romanino. Include, among others, a danse macabre to the right of the altar.
  • Hermitage of St. Peter and Paul, built in the second half of the twentieth century, originated in the XI, XII century, when in came the Valcamonica Cluny.
  • Church of San Defendente on a hill at the north entrance of Bienno dates back to the fifteenth century.
  • Church of St Peter in bonds (or San Peder Suc) of XVI century. Stands on an ara of Bacchus (hence the name St. Peter Succo) of which you can see the remains on the back of the building.
  • Hill of the Christ Re: there stands a monument to Christ the King, the golden statue dating back to 1929.
  • Chapel of pool, of the fifteenth century, reworked in the seventeenth.

The scütüm are in camunian dialect nicknames, sometimes personal, elsewhere showing the characteristic features of a community. The one which characterize the people of Bienno is Padèle.
