The Berones were a stock-raising Celtiberian people that practiced transhumance, which settled in La Rioja and the southern parts of the Soria, Alava and Navarra provinces between 700-500BC. Their capital was Varia or Vareia (Custodia de Viana; Celtiberian mint: Uaracos?), situated near Logroño at the middle Ebro and controlled the towns of Libia (Herramélluri or Leiva), Tritium Megallum (Villar de Bobadilla), Bilibium (Bilibio, near Conchas de Haro) and Contrebia Leukade (Aguillar del Rio Alhama – La Rioja). Allies of the Autrigones, they came under pressure of the Vascones in the early 2nd century BC. [edit] References
