Benedetto Gennari, Supper at Emmaus, 1628
Benedetto Gennari the Senior (1563 - 1658) was an Italian painter of the early-Baroque period, active mainly in Ferrara and Cento. His birthplace is poorly recorded: it is known he entered the studio of Guercino in Bologna at the age of 16. He adopted a style influenced by Caravaggio, and by age 19, was working in the household of Mirandola in Cento. In that town, he helped decorate the Palazzo della communita and the church of Spirito Santo. He is also known as Benedetto Gennari Seniore (the elder), since his sons Benedetto Gennari Juniore and Cesare Gennari were painters. [edit] References
