The Battle of Hondschoote took place during the Campaign of 1793 in the French Revolutionary Wars. It was fought on September 6 through 8, 1793 at Hondschoote, Nord, France, and resulted in a French victory under General Houchard and General Jourdan against the British under the Duke of York.

In the month of August 1793, the prince of Cobourg occupied Condé, Valenciennes, and Le Cateau. At Dunkerque, the French general Souham, second in command to Hoche, bravely stood fast against the besieging British forces of the Duke of York. The commune of Hondschoote was occupied by Hanoverian troops commanded by Marshal Freytag. General Carnot ordered general Houchard to liberate Dunkerque.

On the sixth of September, at the head of an army of 40,000, Houchard marched on Rexpoëde, Bambecque, and Oost-Cappel. On the eighth of september, after a bayonet assault by the gendarmes a pied de Paris, a foot regiment of Parisian grenadiers, Houchard secured Hondschoote.

The Duke of York lifted the siege of Dunkerque and hastily withdrew to the coastal city of Furnes (now Veurne in Belgium), where he rejoined the rest of Marshal Freytag's troops.

At Hondschoote, 40,000 Frenchmen defeated 24,000 British and Hanoverian soldiers, capturing 6 flags and all of the Duke of York's artillery. This strategic victory resulted in the British lifting the Siege of Dunkirk. Despite his triumphant entry into the city, General Houchard was later tried and guillotined for not pursuing the British.
