Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS) is the U.S. Navy's submarine training school for enlisted sailors. Located on Naval Submarine Base New London (NAVSUBASE NLON) in Groton, CT, the school is a six-week introduction to the basic theory, construction and operation of nuclear powered submarines. The course includes instruction on shipboard organization, submarine safety and escape procedures. [1] This program is limited to male candidates only, and requires passing a physical and mental screening. [edit] Daily Schedule0530-620: Wake-up (variable, set your own alarm). Head call 'n Shave. Iron NSU's. Make racks. Dress into PT Gear. 0645: BESS muster. 0700-0800: PT on the ball field or Morton Hall Gymnasium. 0805-0840: Back to room for showers. 3 people, 1 room, 1 shower & commode. Dress into NSU's. Clean floor, desks, head, etc. Chow at galley. 0845-1030: Classes. 1045-1145: Afternoon chow. May run to NEX after eating at the galley if time permits. 1200-1430: Classes. 1600-1750: Evening chow at own choosing, afternoon liberty. 1800-2100: Night study 1500-2200: Liberty.
